Bennington Vermont

Semi-Annual

Water Main Flushing

October 13 - 17, 2008

and

October 20 – 24, 2008

Periodically in Bennington, Vermont we clean water mains of harmless corrosion and accumulated foreign matter by opening hydrants and allowing the water to escape under high pressure.  The flushing action is an important part of our program in order to maintain high quality water.   It also allows for proper hydrant maintenance for fire protection.  Bennington’s Hydrant Flushing is a STATE Mandated Program that occurs every April and October.

Although such flushing may produce temporary discoloration, the safety of the water is not affected in any way.  HOWEVER, water users are advised to run the cold-water tap only for several minutes before use, to determine whether discoloration has occurred.  If discoloration has occurred, it is suggested to re-schedule clothes washing and other cleaning projects until the water runs clear.  Users may also experience low pressure during the flushing schedule.  These are normal and unavoidable side effects of the program

All mains will be flushed between 7:00AM and 5:00PM Monday thru Friday.  During the time this work is performed, it is expected the entire system will be affected.  It is suggested that Restaurants, Laundromats, etc. keep their use to a minimum until water clears.  The water system will be riled and cloudy, but this condition will clear up upon completion of the work.
