BENNINGTON HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION TOWN OFFICE, 205 SOUTH STREET, BENNINGTON, VT WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1999 MEMBERS PRESENT: Sharon Yorke, John Dostal, Tordis Ilg Isselhardt, John Killary, Peter Lucas, Victor Rolando, and Bill Calvin MEMBERS EXCUSED: David Aldrich and Hugh Baker 1. Minutes Thanks were proffered to John Killary for taking minutes on October 27, 1999. Rolando moved that minutes be accepted as written. Lucas seconded. Approved. 2. Gage Street Recognition Discussion centered around how to proceed with the recognition of Gage Street. Dostal asked if it might be appropriate to look at another street for recognition instead. Yorke and Isselhardt felt that the emphases should be on HPC's criteria that the street reflect Bennington's living, changing history. Colvin will draft a resolution for review by Isselhardt and Yorke prior to next meeting. 3. Paper Mill Bridge Colvin informed that work will begin on the Paper Mill Bridge on November 15. Construction is scheduled to be complete by July 2000. Commissioners inquired if anyone from division would be conducting periodic reviews. Colvin will report back at next meeting. 4. National Register Colvin reported that both Cora B. Whitney School and W.H. Bradford Hose Firehouse have been named to the National Register. 5. Downtown Preservation Funding Yorke spoke of the Better Bennington Corporation Annual Meeting and the speaker at that function, Jeff Glasberg. He spoke of the importance of creating a mechanism to assist in the saving of historic structures. The possibility of a panel discussion surrounding this issue will be explored. 6. 136-142 North Street Calvin updated the HPC on RAHC's plans for this building. The Town will participate in the financing of this project. 7. Other Preservation Issues * Isselhardt announced that she has been appointed by the Governor to the Scenery Preservation Council. * Dostal attended the Living History Association Annual Meeting last week. He briefly updated on the groups plans to relocate to Bennington. * Dostal has completed his work on the history of water systems in Bennington and turned this over to the Water Department. * Dostal will coordinate the continued operation of the 250~ Center through the end of the year. * Dostal noted that it has been suggested the Time Capsule be buried at the Monument. Research into sites continues. * Rolando reported that the archaeological report on the Benn El/US Pottery dig is complete.
